Design Ideas for small spaces

I recently worked on furnishing a small (very small) studio apartment to be used as a rental property and it got me thinking about function. How furniture and accessories function in a space should never be compromised, but it’s even more imperative when working within such small parameters. Are you looking to find out how to make the most of your small space?? Then read on!

1.      Dividers – If you’re working within a true studio space and it feels like it needs some differentiating between areas a divider may be right. This can be done with a freestanding bookshelf (2-sided is ideal!) or even a curtain can do the trick without adding too much visual weight. Be cautious with separating parts of your space so it doesn’t feel too compartmentalized – remember what makes a studio a studio is the open and cohesive floor plan!

2.      Furniture selections – It’s important to not let any extra space go unused so hidden storage pieces are going to be key (think double duty!). This could be a trunk or ottoman in lieu of a coffee table, or a murphy or trundle bed. Even raising your bed up to accommodate storage space underneath is a win -

Here are a couple of my favorite pieces!

Also, utilizing pieces that can serve more than one use – futon style sofas, ottomans to be used for a foot rest + mobile seat, or stools that are extra comfortable so they aren’t just used for happy hour, but for when the countertop becomes your workspace. Again 2 of my top picks below!

Lastly with furniture – Be mindful of the sizes of pieces used. Contrary to what you may initially think, larger or regular sized pieces may work well. Think about it this way – if you use a ton of small furniture just because you’re in a small space it’s going to feel overly cluttered. With saying that – I would try to forego the “visually heavy” kind of pieces if possible to keep an overall light and airy feel. Even see-through furniture is popular right now!

3.      Wall Décor – Take advantage of impactful wall décor! Using mirrors will help accentuate the size of the space by reflecting any natural light and making the space feel larger overall (go big if you can!). Also, you can use wall space to add a unique kind of wall shelf. This way it doubles as a piece of art adding character and storage, like shown below:

4.      Window Treatments – Consider full length panels. This will emphasize the windows and don’t be afraid to install them higher than you initially think (even to the ceiling, trust me!). It will make it feel like you have more ceiling height. Lastly, if there are multiple windows, be sure to repeat the same treatment styles throughout for consistency.

5.      Use your vertical space – It may be all you have to work with so use it! In a living room kind of area consider a blanket ladder if some kind of height is needed; it’s a trendy piece that comes in many different styles. In the bathroom narrow wall shelves are going to be your friend. This can be used to display your toiletries (and give you a reason to buy the kinds in the cute bottles). In the kitchen – consider hanging those pots and pans. Sometimes all you have is up so don’t be afraid to take it!

So there are your 5 tips. It’s key to be mindful about what you are bringing in when you’re in tight quarters. Try to keep it light, simple, and functional! Do you have any tips to add??
