Creating a Romantic Bedroom Retreat

With most not venturing out for a date night dinner or staycation weekend per usual, you may be looking for a way to capture some Valentine’s Day vibes at home. Let me help with a few tips on how to create a cozy nest in the bedroom. Guys, I’m not getting all mushy and talking rose petals, rather some easy ways to renew that adult oasis that makes you joyful to enter it once again. After all, the master bedroom should as least exude SOME level of a romantic ambiance!

Mixing Old and New – This is something I try to incorporate into every room that I work on, but the bedroom is no exception. In a room with entirely new everything it may feel cold or one with all the same collection for your pieces it tends to feel matchy matchy. A balanced mix of old and new furniture, pictures, unique artwork, and accessories will create an eclectic yet curated feel that is most comfortable to you.

2. Bold Accent – Adding an accent or focal piece that is rich in hue or pattern will make a huge statement. For example, an accent wall behind the bed is a great way to add some character with a floral wallpaper or a dark wall paint color (even black!) to bring a sense of mystery and allure.

3. Soft Layers – Have you ever walked into a hotel room and wanted to crawl into the bed because it looks so irresistible? What is stopping you from recreating that same moment at home?? Layers are key for physically and visually creating comfort. Consider upgrading your bedding for a new luxurious feel. Cotton, linen, or cashmere are popular options for sheets depending how you prefer to sleep at night temperature-wise. For a top layer pick from a comforter, fluffy duvet, or quilt/ coverlet (or any combination of these!) A couple of my favorite places for bedding below! are Brooklinen or Parachute or Boll and Branch. Then of course layer up with pillows in varying textures!

4. Layered Lighting – Again, important in most rooms if you ask me, but especially in the one that is the last place before your eyes close at night and the first they open in the morning. First, start with your ambient lighting which is the main overhead lighting in the space. Dimmers are everything and can really set the tone in any space so definitely a great feature in a bedroom. Then add some accent and task lighting. This will most likely be a table lamp on nightstands, wall sconces on sides of your bed, or possibly a floor lamp in a reading nook. Having multiple options sets you up for when you want a brighter room getting ready in the morning or cleaning and you can pick and choose the level of lighting that you want when winding down at night.

5. Luxe Adds – Sometimes it is just a touch of something luxurious needed to really elevate your space. Some upholstered items like a chair, headboard, or pillow can work well to achieve this in a master bedroom. Think tufts or channels on these items. Also, pieces with a curvilinear shape give a soft and subtle feminine side and elegance. Likewise, adding a touch of velvet evokes an especially moody and dreamy space.

I hope this gives you some ammo to take your bedroom up a notch and show it along with yourself some love. Happy Valentines Day!
