2020 Interior Design Trends

Welcome to 2020, not only a new year, but decade! It’s hard to be sure of what the next 12 months will bring, but we do know that expectations and trends in the home and continuously changing. I’ve gathered 5 aspects of interior design trends that I foresee happening this year based on fashion, presentations in the design industry, and trade shows.

1. Colors – There are a lot of different trends within color palettes that can be expected. First off, neutrals are still huge. There’s something about layering textural neutrals that is just so satisfying, but grays seem to be going away and more warm neutrals are being used across the board. Also, pink is a new neutral. I predict that 2020’s blush will act as mauve the in the 1980’s. Close your eyes and think breezy calming living room (also continuously popular) with some accents of a sweet blush in pillows and accessories. Have you transported to a chic vacation yet? Last and on the contrary, saturated hues are huge. Think deep, bold, and moody: What better companion for those sought after neutrals than jewel-tones?? Lookout for these in vibrant wallcoverings, appliances, and floor to ceiling paint in rooms. Pantone color of the year, Classic Blue is no exception to this saturated palette!

2. On the patterns front – head to the wild side! Animal prints have been in and they aren’t going anywhere. From trendy accessories in the fashion world (shoes, hair bands, purses) translating to accessories in the home (pillows, bench fabric, rugs) you’ll find they are surprisingly easy to pepper in. Another trend in patterns this year is to mix them. Don’t be afraid to combine different unexpected patterns to create something unique. Making sure these have some variety in shapes or scales or keeping the same color realm is key to making it still feel cohesive.

3. Cabinets – In 2019 two-toned cabinetry was very popular. I would anticipate this to continue, but also be built-upon and have three-toned cabinetry implemented. How can this be you ask?? Typical two-toned cabinetry would be the upper and lowers being different or the main cabinetry one color and the island contrasting. Now, an example of a three-toned scheme may be:

1.       main cabinetry

2.       island

3.       floor-to-ceiling hutch

Another way this could be implemented would be:

1.       all perimeter main cabinetry

2.       island

3.       accent window trim or a statement pantry door

This seems like it could get really busy, but I would suggest making 2 of the 3 colors natural wood tones or neutral paint and then making a statement with the third – like a bold blue or green. In my opinion if done right, it can look really sharp! Now that that’s taken care of, we can hit a couple more cabinetry items I would expect to come: One is shaker style cabinetry. This not new folks, but it’s also not going anywhere and for a good reason. It’s so versatile and can be used anywhere in the spectrum of traditional to contemporary kitchens. Last, we can’t skip hardware. Bold statement pieces of hardware are in – Gold, brass, mixed metals. This is an element that can easily be swapped for a different look so it makes sense to have these be a special accent. Also, with sleeker cabinetry I would say that concealed hardware is going to be a hit since minimalism is everything these days.

4. Fabrics + Textiles – Luxury and comfort: if these can be accomplished together this is life and what depicts it more than velvet? It doesn’t need to be expensive, but you sure can make it look like it! Velvet is offered in a wide array of beautiful saturated hues that make it easy to make a bold impression in any room. The thought of this in a tufted sectional makes me swoon, but to start small consider this for your next pillow, ottoman, or curtains for a romantic and chic look! Next up – Corduroy: slowly but surely making a return (along with those flair jeans). Look for this in the fashion world just as much as that new cozy accent chair. Lastly, textile arts are huge. It’s hard to fight – beautifully woven macrome pieces provide a subtle softness in a room. Think about swapping out a piece of art in your home for a 3D piece.

5. Biophilia – As times evolve, we continue to be more aware of how our surroundings affect our health and tend to seek a deeper connection with nature. Design that features wood tones will be seen across the board – cabinetry, furniture, and architectural accents like ceiling beams (walnut is especially popular still, I can imagine because of its durability and elegant graining.) Also, plants are everywhere. I truly believe adding some greenery to any space is essential to add some vibrancy and life, but lately it’s being taken to a next level. Benefits have been shown such as purifying the air and improving concentration and with all of the cute planters out there now – who can complain?! If you’re interested in finding ways to a greener office (the second home) check out this blog post.

Which of these design trends excites you the most? and are there other ones that you’re looking forward to?? Let me know in the comments! Be sure to follow along on the gram to see how these are implemented by SIS in 2020!
